Pine Creek Cookhouse

The Pine Creek Cookhouse is more than a restaurant, it’s an experience that you will never forget. To get there (in winter), you’ll need cross-country skis or a horse-drawn sleigh (contact the Cookhouse to reserve your carriage. Note: make sure to pack warm layers!). You can hike or bike here in summer. Once you arrive at this homely log cabin, make sure to get a seat on the fabulous deck overlooking the Elk Mountains, and let the friendly staff take care of your needs. The dinner menu contains game specialties such as quail, elk, wild boar and more. Lunch: hot smoked salmon, salad, spinach crepes and Hungarian goulash are the specialties.

Piñons

Piñons is the hardest place to get a reservation (summer or winter) in Aspen and with good reason. This quintessential Aspen dining experience, with a Colorado-Western theme, has a creative southwestern-inspired menu and an extensive wine list. Appetizers at Piñons are unique, try the pheasant quesadilla with herbed goat cheese and peperonata or Prince Edward Island mussels in a puff pastry. Main courses consist of elk tenderloin, Colorado striped bass, grilled rack of lamb, New York steak, blackened pork tenderloin and more. The Silver Circle Ice Rink located across from the Rubey Park Bus Station at the base of Aspen Mountain transforms into a miniature golf course in Aspen’s summer months. Silver Queen Gondola

Step right up! Ride the Silver Queen Gondola all the way to the top of Aspen Mountain. Once you’re there try out the climbing wall or take a jump with Eurobungy. If that’s not your thing there’s disc golf, an obstacle course and even the popular silver nugget dig! Mine for silver just like the old days in Aspen – the small silver nuggets can be taken as a souvenir. Have lunch at the Sundeck or pack a picnic of your own. The view from 11,212 ft. isn’t too shabby either!

Skateboarding

Whether you’re a novice or a shredder, Aspen’s very own Rio Grande Skate Park is a great place to play. Located near the popular Rio Grande Park and Trail the Skate Park includes all types of terrain from a clover bowl, peewee bowl and pool wall extension to a deep vertical bowl. Lessons are available through Radio Boardshop and All Star Skate Camp.

Smuggler Mine Tours

The hike up Smuggler Mountain is more than just a hike – did you know that beneath the hike is one of the most prominent and productive of Colorado’s silver mines? The Smuggler generated a record-breaking nugget of nearly pure silver that weighed close to a ton! This exciting, guided tour takes trekkers into the mine and demonstrates firsthand how challenging the mining of the 19th century was.

Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater rafting is the ultimate Colorado experience and Aspen is home to mellow streams and Class IV rapids alike. If you prefer a quiet canoe or stand up paddle, check out the North Star Nature Preserve and its winding meander through untouched Rocky Mountain splendor. If action packed adventures are more your speed then there are plenty of Class II, III and IV options along the Roaring Fork River, Colorado River and even day trips headed over Independence Pass to the Arkansas River.
